ソープランドとは何？
There is a place in Japan called Soapland. Do you know what it is?
日本でソープランドと呼ばれる場所があります。何だかおわかりですか？
This is, quite simply, the Japanese version of a massage parlor. The term “massage parlor” is not common in Japan. Many Japanese probably do not know what a massage parlor is. However, there is an equivalent service, which is called soapland. It is an establishment that offers sex to male customers. Prostitution is illegal in Japan, but this soapland is an exception.
これはズバリ、日本版のマッサージパーラーのことです。マッサージパーラーという言葉は日本では一般的ではありません。多分、多くの日本人にはマッサージパーラーの意味はわからないでしょう。ただし、これに相当するサービスがあって、それがソープランドという訳です。男性顧客にセックスを提供する店舗のことです。日本で買春は違法ですが、このソープランドだけは例外です。
Every large city in Japan has an area with a high concentration of soaplands. There are always several in large cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, and one in every regional city. As you can see in this picture, the entire street is occupied by soapland establishments.
日本の大きな都市には、必ずソープランドが密集する地域があります。東京や大阪などの大都市には複数個所、地方の都市には一か所は必ずあります。この写真のように通り全体がソープランドの店で占めれれています。
It is quiet during the day, but gorgeous at night. However, they are all discreetly located and not necessarily conveniently accessible. So, it is not for tourists. Unless, of course, you are a man and want to take advantage of this service.

The most famous soapland district in Tokyo is Yoshiwara. It has a long history and was established here in 1617 under the name of “Yukaku”. Since it is located near Asakusa, it is possible to go there on foot for a stroll. It was prosperous during Japan’s growth period. It is a little regrettable that the former bustle has decreased now.
東京で一番有名なソープランド街は吉原です。歴史は古く1617年、ここに遊郭という名前で作られました。浅草に近いので、散歩がてら歩いて行くことも可能です。日本の成長期には隆盛を極めていました。今は以前の賑わいが減ってしまい、少し残念です。
