Shunga are paintings depicting the sexual customs of old Japan. Shunga originated more than 1,000 years ago during the Heian period (794-1192). They were used to satisfy sexual desires and as sex education texts for brides. It was also used as a kind of amulet to ward off misfortune. Merchants used to place shunga in their houses in hopes of avoiding house fires.
